Harad belongs to Combretaceae family, commonly known as “Haritaki”. The fruit is famous rejuvenating herb and commonly useful for constipation and other digestion related disorders.
Harad is known to protect against age-related diseases. This is because it helps fight oxidative stress. it was observed that Harad boosts the concentration of many well known antioxidants, like gluthione, vitamin C, gallic acid, and ellagic acid. The fruit of the Harad is an effective antioxidant. It is an excellent free radical scavenger. Studies also show that, it can be used to protect humans from radiation induced damage. The fruit is also used to prevent aging, and building immunity and body resistance against diseases. Harad benefits the whole digestive tract. It is said to increase appetite, and improve digestion and absorption. It provides effective cure for piles, gastro-intestinal infections and diarrhoea. It can also be used for colic and wind, worms, constipation, IBS and vomitting. The unripe fruit is considered to be more of a laxative than the ripe one. Harad is also useful for infections of the gut and for parasites including amoebas. It is also said to be effective for use in inflammation of the mucous membrane and ulcers.
In the text of Ayurveda the fruit is considered as “Tridoshnashak” which contains all five “Rasas” and considered to balance all “Tridoshas” (Vata, Vita, and Kapha). When taken along with salt, it balances Kapha with sugar it balances Pitta and if taken with ghee, it helps in balancing in Vata disorders.

Scientifically the fruit is proven as: • Rich source of polyphenols • Natural immunity booster • Anti-aging agent • Anti-oxidant agent • Laxative and purgative
Recommended usage: Take about 3-5g of Harar powder empty stomach with lukewarm water daily. It can be used in the form of decoction prepared by boiling of 3-5gm of Baheda powder in 200ml water for 5-7minutes. Filter it and have a sip after meal to improve the digestion.
Caution: Pregnant and lactating mothers should not consume. Contradictions: Consult with health care professional if already taking iron supplements or any other medications.
